From Fundamentals to Certified Master Gardener

Pathway from Fundamentals to Certified Master Gardener

Students who wish to advance from the Fundamentals of Home Gardening program to become a Certified Master Gardener (MG) must complete a structured transition process that ensures full preparation and mastery of essential gardening principles.

Step 1: Complete the Fundamentals Program

To qualify for the transition, students must:

  • Successfully complete all four Fundamentals of Home Gardening courses

  • Achieve passing scores on all module quizzes

Completing these steps confirms that the student has covered the foundational content equivalent to the core portion of the Master Gardener curriculum.

Step 2: Fulfill Master Gardener Program Requirements

After finishing the Fundamentals courses, students may apply to enter the Master Gardener certification track. Continuing students must complete the following requirements:

  • Online Mid‑Term Exam: Minimum passing score of 70%

  • In‑Person Written Exam: Minimum passing score of 70%

  • Volunteer Hours: At least 30 in-office hours and 30 outreach hours

  • Diagnostic Practice: Identify plant and/or disease specimens

  • Diagnostic Final Exam: Minimum passing score of 70%

  • Tree/Shrub/Vine (TSV) Project: Collect, preserve, and correctly identify plant specimens

  • Final Master Gardener Essay: Reflective written component evaluating knowledge and experience

Step 3: Participate in County-Based Activities

Transitioning students select their home county for official program participation. Depending on space availability, students may:

  • Attend weekly in-person lectures or

  • Stream live online sessions

When the county program reaches the mid-term period, students will formally enter the Master Gardener program and complete their mid-term and written exams alongside enrolled MG students. Upon earning scores of 70% or higher, they proceed to fulfill the remaining program requirements.

Step 4: Follow the Transition Timeline

  • All four Fundamentals courses must be completed within a 12‑month period.

  • Students must request transition into the Master Gardener program at the beginning of the next scheduled mid-term exam period.

  • After passing all exams and completing the practical and volunteer requirements, the student will earn the Certified Master Gardener designation.
